Bald Knob Cross, a hundred feet of white on a hilltop
1963
Bald Knob, Alto Pass, Union County, Illinois

A cross a hundred and eleven feet tall on the highest ground in southern Illinois, visible for miles at night and paid for in part by farm families donating the money from selling chickens. It was finished in 1963 after more than a decade of that. The porcelain panels degraded badly enough that it was reskinned in 2010, which took another fundraising campaign of the same kind.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
