The Pail and Shovel Party
Lake Mendota, off Memorial Union, Madison, Wisconsin
![]()
Two students ran for the student government in 1978 promising escalators for the campus hills, a name change to the University of New Jersey, and the Statue of Liberty brought to Madison. They won. On 22 February 1979 her head, arm and torch appeared out of the ice off the Union, four thousand dollars of styrofoam, with the story that it had been airlifted in and dropped through. It nearly got them thrown out of office and an arsonist burned it ten days later.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
