Charles Colding wrote an editorial for the student paper arguing that Northern's mostly Black students were getting a worse education than white students at Redford, and the English department refused to print it. Colding, Judy Walker and Michael Batchelor called a walkout in April 1966 and about 2,300 students went out. They ran their own Freedom School while they stayed out. The principal was removed and the city set up a commission to publish comparative data on school quality.
