The Newark Agreements shrink the medical school that helped cause a rebellion

A state plan to clear 150 acres of the mostly Black Central Ward for a new medical school was named by the governor's commission as one of the causes of the 1967 rebellion. The negotiations that followed produced the Newark Agreements in 1968, cutting the campus to about 58 acres and leaving vacant land for community groups to build housing on. The college also took over the city's Martland Hospital and committed to hiring and training Black and Puerto Rican workers and to a community health review council. University Hospital still carries those obligations.
