On the evening of 12 July 1967 a cab driver named John Smith went around a police car on 15th Avenue, was dragged out, beaten and taken into the Fourth Precinct station. Black cab drivers put the news out over their radios, a rumour spread that Smith had died, and a crowd gathered at the station and put its windows in. Five days of shooting, looting and fire followed, the governor sent in the State Police and the National Guard, and 26 people were killed. The precinct building on 17th Avenue is still standing.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
