Drowned stands of dead cedar along this coast were dated to the winter of 1699-1700, and Native oral accounts described a night the ground shook and the sea came in. The final proof was in Japan, where officials recorded a destructive tsunami on 27 January 1700 with no earthquake felt beforehand, an orphan wave. Working back across the Pacific gave the date and the hour, and told the Northwest it sits on a fault that does this roughly every 250 to 500 years.
