The Navy bought 870 acres at White Oak in 1944 and had moved its ordnance laboratory out of Washington by 1948, developing and testing weapons on the site for the next four decades. Base closure ended it in 1995. The Food and Drug Administration consolidated its headquarters onto the same ground, so a weapons campus became a drug regulator's campus.
