The Mr. Roboto Project, a punk club its own members owned
1999
Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania
Two Pittsburgh punks, Mike Q. Roth and Eric Meisberger, wanted an all-ages room that no promoter controlled, so they copied the co-op model of 924 Gilman in Berkeley and crossed it with the East End Food Co-op. Members paid dues and voted on what the space did. The first show was in this Wilkinsburg storefront in November 1999, and hundreds of punk, hardcore and indie bands played here before the co-op moved to Garfield in 2011. The Big Idea Bookstore and the bike shop Free Ride both grew out of the same crowd.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
