924 Gilman, the punk club that banned Green Day
1986

A volunteer collective opened this all ages club in a West Berkeley warehouse in December 1986, with the rules painted by the door: no alcohol, no drugs, no violence, no racism, no sexism, no homophobia, and no bands signed to a major label. Operation Ivy, Rancid, AFI and Green Day all came up on its stage. Green Day were barred after signing to Reprise in 1993, and the ban held until 2015. The club is still run by volunteers and still books twenty odd shows a month.
