The Mary Gay House and the memoir Margaret Mitchell borrowed from

Mary Ann Harris Gay lived in this house through the Civil War and published her account of it in 1897 as Life in Dixie During the War. Margaret Mitchell said she drew material for Gone with the Wind from it, including the horse that dies on the road. It is one of the few pre-war buildings still standing anywhere near Decatur and now works as an event venue called 716 West.
