The Martin Luther King bridge to Pleasure Island

Pleasure Island is not really an island. It is the spoil the Corps of Engineers piled up while digging the Port Arthur canal in the 1890s and the intracoastal waterway after it. By the 1940s the made ground carried a ballroom, a midway, an Olympic sized pool and the largest roller coaster in the South. A barge hit and burned the old connecting bridge in 1967, so this cantilever span opened in 1970 as the Gulfgate Bridge and was later renamed for Martin Luther King.
