The Marine Corps War Memorial and the flag on Suribachi
1954
Arlington Ridge Park, Arlington, Virginia

The sculpture copies Joe Rosenthal's 1945 Associated Press photograph of six Marines raising a flag on Mount Suribachi during the battle for Iwo Jima. It was dedicated in 1954 to every Marine killed in American service since 1775, not only to the men in the picture. The National Park Service took it over the following year. Most people call it the Iwo Jima Memorial.
