The Grand Union flag goes up on Prospect Hill
1776
Somerville, Massachusetts
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
On New Year's Day 1776 the first flag of the united colonies was raised over the fortified hill above Union Square, six months before independence was declared. The stone tower on the site was built as a memorial and observatory, and its lower deck still looks straight across at Boston. Reenactors hold a flag raising there every January 1.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
