The Marietta Paper Mill ruins on Sope Creek
1864
Marietta, Georgia

A water powered rag mill started turning linen and cotton scrap into paper here in 1855, including cartridge paper for Confederate ammunition, which is why rumour called it the Confederate Mint. Union cavalry under Kenner Garrard burned it on 5 July 1864 while covering Sherman's move to the Chattahoochee crossings. It was rebuilt, burned again in 1870, rebuilt again and ran until 1902. The stone walls still stand in the woods off Paper Mill Road.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
