The Mann-Simons site, one free Black family's Columbia
1843
Richland Street, Columbia
Celia Mann, a free Black midwife, bought this lot and her family held it for 130 years while running a bakery, a shop and a hall from the site. Urban renewal cleared everything around it in the 1970s. Excavation has since recovered the buried outbuildings.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
