The lynching that cost a sheriff his job
1909
Commercial Avenue, Cairo, Illinois
A mob of thousands took Will James from custody in November 1909 and killed him at a downtown arch in front of a crowd that had come to watch, then burned the body. Illinois had passed a law in 1905 saying a sheriff who let a prisoner be lynched forfeited the office, and this is the case that made it real: the governor removed Sheriff Frank Davis, and the state supreme court refused to give the job back.
