The lynching of Cleo Wright
1942
Sunset Addition, Sikeston, Missouri

A mob took Cleo Wright out of the city jail in January 1942, dragged him behind a car into the Black neighbourhood and burned him alive in front of two congregations letting out of Sunday service. It was the first lynching the United States Justice Department ever moved on, partly because Axis radio was broadcasting it back at a country then six weeks into a war about freedom. The grand jury refused to indict anybody and nobody was ever convicted, but the federal precedent stood.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
