Nathaniel Lynch started a rope pulled flatboat across the San Jacinto River here in 1822, and boats have crossed at this point ever since, which makes it the oldest ferry in Texas. In April 1836 thousands of women and children fleeing Santa Anna's army piled up at this landing during the Runaway Scrape, and on the day of the battle the boat carried wounded men back over the water. Lynch was accused of gouging his passengers. The county took the crossing over in 1888 and it has been free since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
