The Luzon Building, a Burnham and Root block torn down in 2009

The Chicago firm of Daniel Burnham and John Root designed this six story block on Pacific Avenue, built in 1890 and 1891 as the Pacific National Bank with apartments on the upper floors. It picked up the Luzon name in 1901 after the Philippine island where William Howard Taft had just installed an American civil government. Preservationists fought for years to save it, and the city demolished it in 2009.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
