The Loew's Valencia, the first Wonder Theatre
1929
Jamaica, Queens, New York

John Eberson designed the Valencia as an atmospheric movie palace and it opened on Jamaica Avenue in January 1929, the first of the five Loew's Wonder Theatres built around New York. The auditorium was dressed as a Spanish Baroque courtyard under a ceiling meant to pass for open sky. The Tabernacle of Prayer for All People has held services in it since 1977, which is the main reason the plasterwork survived while other palaces were gutted or knocked down.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
