The Bootheel was a million acres of cypress swamp until a drainage district cut nearly a thousand miles of ditches and moved more earth than the Panama Canal. What came out was some of the most productive cotton land in the country, farmed largely by tenants brought up from the Deep South, which is why the southeast corner of Missouri looks, sounds and votes more like Arkansas than like the rest of the state.
