The levee blown to save Cairo
2011
Birds Point, Mississippi County, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
With the river at a record height and the Cairo floodwall close to failing, the Corps of Engineers pumped explosive slurry into the Birds Point levee and opened it, flooding a hundred and thirty thousand acres of Missouri farmland to drop the gauge across the river. Missouri sued to stop it and lost. The plan to do exactly this had been on the books since 1928.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
