The Caernarvon levee is dynamited to save New Orleans

On 29 April 1927 engineers set the first charges in the levee at Caernarvon, and over ten days they used thirty nine tons of dynamite to open a channel that poured the swollen Mississippi across St. Bernard and Plaquemines. New Orleans bankers and officials had pushed for the breach and promised to make the flooded parishes whole. Of more than twelve million dollars in eligible claims, under three million was ever paid. Historians now think upstream levee breaks had already relieved the river and the blast changed nothing.
