The 1940 floating bridge to Mercer Island was fifty years old and under repair when crews cut openings into its hollow concrete pontoons and left them open over the Thanksgiving weekend of 1990. A storm drove rain and lake water in. On 25 November eight pontoons went down one after another, slowly enough that news crews filmed the entire collapse live. Nobody was killed. The replacement carries eastbound Interstate 90 and is the second longest floating bridge in the world, and the Homer Hadley span beside it became the first floating bridge anywhere to carry trains.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
