The Krueger-Scott Mansion and Madame Louise Scott

Gottfried Krueger, the brewer, put up this 26 room house at the end of the 1880s on what was then High Street, and it was the biggest home in Newark. Louise Scott was born in South Carolina, cleaned houses by day and went to beauty school at night, built a chain of salons across the city, and bought the mansion at the end of the 1950s for 85,000 dollars. She ran the Scott College of Beauty Culture out of it and is generally counted as the first Black woman in Newark to make a million dollars.
