One of the wealthiest women in America built an Italianate villa with a private art gallery, a bear house and a water tower. During the war she travelled to her Louisiana plantations and got 2,800 bales of cotton past both the Confederate army, which wanted them burned, and the Union navy, then sold the lot in Liverpool for close to a million dollars.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
