The Katyń Memorial at Exchange Place
1991
Exchange Place, Jersey City, New Jersey
Polish veterans living in Hudson County raised the money themselves through the 1980s and commissioned Andrzej Pitynski to make this. The bronze is a bound and gagged soldier run through the back with a bayoneted rifle, and the granite base holds soil brought from Katyn Forest, where Soviet forces shot more than twenty thousand Polish officers and officials in 1940. It was dedicated in May 1991, months before the Soviet Union dissolved.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
