The Charleston hospital workers' strike
1969
Charleston, South Carolina
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Some 400 Black hospital workers, nearly all women, struck for 113 days over pay and recognition. Coretta Scott King and Ralph Abernathy marched with them, the National Guard occupied the city, and the strike is generally counted the last major campaign of the civil rights era.
