The Jackson Ferry shot tower
Austinville, Wythe County, Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Making round shot before machines meant dropping molten lead far enough that surface tension pulled it into spheres before it hit water, so Thomas Jackson built a stone tower seventy five feet tall on a bluff and dug a shaft seventy five feet further down to a water kettle at river level. Lead came from the mines a mile away. It is one of three shot towers left standing in the country and the only one you can climb.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
