Chris McCandless walked in along the Stampede Trail in April 1992, lived in an abandoned Fairbanks city bus, and died of starvation that August at 24, unable to recross the swollen Teklanika River. Krakauer's book and the 2007 film sent so many pilgrims out here, and enough of them needed rescue, that the state finally airlifted Bus 142 off the trail in 2020. The bus is being restored for display at the University of Alaska's Museum of the North. This is the spot where it sat.
