The wild river four suburban men canoe down, badly, is this one on the Georgia–South Carolina line. The film made whitewater rafting a national pastime and the river a destination, which is grim given the plot. It also drowned several would-be paddlers in the years after who overestimated themselves exactly as the characters do.
