Chris Smith spent two years and ninety hours of film following Mark Borchardt around Menomonee Falls as he tried to finish a thirty-five-minute horror short called Coven, to fund a feature he had been planning for years, while broke and drinking and directing his own mother and his elderly uncle Bill. It won the documentary grand jury prize at Sundance in 1999. It is very funny and it is not laughing at him, which is the hard part, and it has become the film that people show other people who say they want to make films.
