The Impossible Railroad
1919
Carrizo Gorge, California
John D. Spreckels spent twelve years and $18 million putting a railway east through Carrizo Gorge, 17 tunnels and a wooden trestle curving 200 feet above the desert floor. It dipped into Mexico for 44 miles and washouts closed it repeatedly. Most of it has not run since 1983.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
