Paul Bunyan, born in Bangor, says Bangor
1959
Bangor, Maine
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Bangor put up a thirty-one-foot Paul Bunyan in 1959, declared the lumber town his official birthplace, and sealed a time capsule in the pedestal to be opened in 2084. Minnesota disputes the birthplace claim with two statues of its own. Bangor's is taller than either and holds a peavey. Stephen King put the statue to work as a monster in It, which locals regard as the statue's finest hour.
