1900
North German Lloyd piers, Hoboken, New Jersey

Cotton bales stacked on the North German Lloyd piers caught on 30 June 1900 and the fire ran a quarter of a mile along the waterfront in about fifteen minutes, reaching stored turpentine and oil. Four liners burned, including the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. Sailors trapped below decks could not get out through portholes cut too small for a man, and the death toll was never fixed, with counts running from about 160 to more than 300.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
