The Guyon Hotel, built by the dance hall owner who campaigned to abolish jazz

J. Louis Guyon ran an enormous West Side ballroom and spent the 1920s advertising against the music every other hall in the city was playing. His notices called for abolishing jazz, the fox trot, the one step, the toddle and the shimmy, and he told a reporter that modern dancing was creating an army of degenerates. Waltzes and two steps were what he permitted. He spent about 1.65 million dollars on this terra cotta hotel in 1927 and 1928, kept the south penthouse for himself, and put radio towers on the roof.
