The Grumman plume under Bethpage
1986

The Navy and Grumman built military aircraft on this ground from 1942 to 1996, and the solvents used to degrease the parts went into the sand underneath it. One contaminated groundwater plume was found in 1986 and a second in 2009. Together they run about four miles, cover thousands of acres, reach hundreds of feet down, and carry trichloroethylene and 1,4-dioxane toward the wells the surrounding water districts draw from. A binding consent decree signed in 2022 put the containment and the cleanup on Northrop Grumman and the Navy.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
