The Eaton Fire burns Altadena
2025
Eaton Canyon, Los Angeles County, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The fire started in Eaton Canyon on the evening of 7 January 2025 and a Santa Ana wind pushed it down into the foothill communities, hitting Altadena hardest. At least nineteen people were killed and more than 9,000 buildings were destroyed before it was contained on 31 January, making it the second most destructive wildfire in California history. The Justice Department attributed the cause to Southern California Edison transmission lines and sued the utility.
