Woodlawn Memorial Park, where Compton buried its Union dead
1871
Compton, California
Opened as the Compton Rural Cemetery in 1871, this is one of the oldest burial grounds in Los Angeles County. Union Army remains were moved here in 1887 when the cemetery holding them was cleared for houses, and a Grand Army of the Republic post raised a monument over them in 1938. The county listed the site as a historic landmark in 1946. It holds roughly 26,800 graves and is no longer licensed by the state to bury anyone new.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
