On the night of 23 July 1968 Cleveland police and a Black Power group called the Black Nationalists of New Libya exchanged fire here for roughly four hours. Three officers, three of the gunmen and a bystander were killed, and at least fifteen more people were wounded. Rioting broke out as the shooting died down and ran to the night of 26 July, during which Carl Stokes, the city's Black mayor, pulled white officers back and sent Black officers and community leaders in instead.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
