The first white settlement in Evanston went up in the 1830s along this glacial ridge, the strip of high ground running parallel to the lake. Once Northwestern opened and the rail line reached Chicago, the same ridge became the address wealthy Chicagoans wanted. Most of the houses in the district were built between 1860 and 1930.
