The Galax fiddlers' convention
1935
Felts Park, Galax, Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The oldest and largest old-time music competition in the world takes over a town park for a week every August, and the part that matters is not the stage. Thousands camp in the field and play in circles until dawn, strangers dropping in and out by ear, which is how the tunes actually move between generations. Ribbons are given for banjo, fiddle, dulcimer and flatfoot dance.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
