Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain sound

Stanley played banjo in a clawhammer style learned from his mother and sang in a high mountain voice that owed more to Primitive Baptist lining-out than to anything on the radio. He was seventy-three and largely unknown outside bluegrass when O Brother, Where Art Thou? Put his unaccompanied O Death in front of millions and won him a Grammy.
