The Freedmen's Colony on Roanoke Island

Around three thousand people who had escaped slavery built a town here under Union protection, streets laid out, a sawmill, a fishery, schools taught largely by Black teachers, and men enlisting in the Colored Troops. It was meant to be permanent. After the war the land was returned to its prewar owners, the colony was dissolved, and nearly all of it has gone under sand and scrub.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
