Freedmen's Cemetery lies buried under the Chalmette battlefield
1867
Chalmette, Louisiana

The Freedmen's Bureau took four acres beside the national cemetery in 1867 and moved thousands of Black civilian burials there off the Chalmette grounds. About 716 more people were buried by 1869, most referred from Louisiana's Freedmen's Hospitals and marked only with wooden headboards. River flooding laid silt over the site until nothing showed above ground. The ledgers naming the dead survive in the National Archives.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
