The escape from the Lincoln County courthouse
1881
Lincoln, New Mexico
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Awaiting hanging for the murders of the Lincoln County War, Billy the Kid killed both his guards and rode out of Lincoln in April 1881, a three-month freedom that ended in Pete Maxwell's bedroom at Fort Sumner. The whole town is preserved as a historic site, the courthouse still shows a bullet hole attributed to the escape, and the single street looks close enough to 1881 that the story tells itself. The war it belonged to was a fight between shopkeepers that killed a couple dozen men.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
