The Erie Gauge War

Erie sat where two railways of different gauges met, which meant every through passenger and every ton of freight had to be unloaded, carried across town and reloaded, and the city made a living from doing it. When the companies moved to standardise the gauge and end the break, the citizens tore up track, burned bridges and rioted, led by their own mayor, through the winter of 1853. The rest of the country found it hilarious and the papers called it the Peanut War. Erie lost.
