The Episcopal diocese votes in Monroeville to leave its church
2008
Monroeville, Pennsylvania
On 4 October 2008 clergy and lay delegates of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh met in Monroeville and voted to break from the national Episcopal Church, mostly over sexuality and biblical authority, and to put themselves under the Anglican Province of the Southern Cone in South America. Their bishop, Robert Duncan, had been deposed by the House of Bishops the month before, and the realigned body elected him back a month later. At least 17 of the 74 congregations refused to go, and years of litigation over the property followed.
