The Ellis Island for animals, in Clifton

The federal government built this station in the Athenia section of Clifton in 1900 to hold imported livestock in isolation before they were allowed into the country, and people called it the Ellis Island for animals. It ran for seventy five years and closed in 1975. Part of the ground became the Clifton Municipal Complex, and two of the surviving buildings were linked by an atrium to make the Clifton Arts Center. It went on the National Register in 1981 and preservationists still list it as threatened.
