Clarkston becomes the most diverse square mile in America

Federal resettlement agencies picked Clarkston in the 1980s and 1990s for unglamorous reasons: rents were low, apartments stood empty as residents moved further out, and the town sat at the last stop on a transit line into Atlanta. A small, overwhelmingly white DeKalb County town took in refugees from dozens of countries and doubled in population, reaching about 14,750 by 2020. It is now routinely called the most diverse square mile in America and the Ellis Island of the South.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
